Admissions - English

Undergraduate

Turkish students are admitted to the undergraduate program on the basis of their performance at the University Entrance Examination (ÖSS) held annually by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) . In 1999, applicants with a score of 198.940 and higher were admitted to the department. In 1999, quantitative and qualitative scores carried equal weight in determining the cumulative score. What is expected from the students in the undergraduate program?

Throughout their undergraduate years students are expected to extensively read and write. The reading load of an average student is such that he/she would have to spend a significant portion of his/her nights and weekends trying to meet course requirements. While quantitative skills are often useful in enabling the students to grasp the cause-end relationships so essential in social sciences, competence in English and willingness to develop one's writing skills are necessary to succeed. Students are expected to regularly attend class sessions to participate in class discussions after having previously read the weekly assignments. Most courses would also require that students write term papers 10-20 pages in length. Students are also encouraged to learn a second foreign language the instruction of which is available at METU.

Graduate Programmes

Students interested in pursuing an M. Sc. or a Ph. D degree should ask for application materials from the Student Affairs Office (SAO). Applicants should abide by the deadlines of the SAO and make sure that they submitted all the required documents. Once their applications are approved by the SAO, the remaining hurdle for the applicants is the interview the Department of International Relations will conduct. Based on their performance at the interviews, their undergraduate degrees, and their overall academic potential as assessed by a departmental committee, students will be either admitted to the graduate programs or will be denied admission. Among those admitted, some may be asked to take a number of undergraduate courses - before they start with the graduate program -- if their undergraduate degrees are in fields other than international relations.

Applications are accepted through web. Please visit online application page. For detailed information on application procedures, see the page of Institute of Social Sciences.
