The purpose of these E.S.P. (English for Special Purposes) courses is to significantly develop the English proficiency of all our International Relations students by using materials that will be useful for them in their courses and also later in their professional life. The emphasis is on speaking, listening, reading and vocabulary development but some writing will also be done. In the second year, C.V. writing will be taught. In the first semester, articles from different magazines, journals and books will be read and discussed. In addition, each week a different topic will be discussed after watching a video program on either current events, history or another topic. Comprehension and vocabulary exercises from some of these programs will be done. Vocabulary will be further developed by using some of the units of Barron's 1,100 Words You Need to Know and by studying words, phrases and idioms from the articles read. In the second semester, reading and discussion units will be prepared by the students to give them even more of an opportunity to choose topics of interest and to lead their classmates in discussions. There will be two exams and grades will also be given for class participation and for an essay in the first semester and for the "presentation" in the second semester. Students are also encouraged to attend lectures given in town on relevant topics and to find examples of vocabulary used in our program. These and other assignments may be given for extra credit.
