Course Objective This course, composed of a series of seminars given by the prominent scholars in their fields, aims to provide the exchange students with a general understanding of Turkish politics, society and international relations. Regarding the issues related to Turkish politics, the course presents the general characteristics of the Turkish Republic, its historical roots and formation and the political and democratic structure of the country. Regarding the Turkish society, the course focuses on the customs and traditions, role of Islam, the migration issues as well as the human development indicators. In the third part of the course the main characteristics of the Turkish foreign policy is examined, focusing on Turkey’s relations with the European Union, the Middle East and Russia. Course ContentA survey of contemporary Turkish state and society issues designed specifically for METU`s exchange students. It covers the historical, economical, political, social, cultural and foreign policy developments of modern Turkey from the late 19th century Ottoman Empire to the present.
