The Department offers a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to combine a through understanding of the discipline of International Relations, with emphasis on specialization in regional studies. In the initial two years of the four-year program, the students are expected to succeed in the courses related to the main branches of social sciences. The ensuing two years are designed to provide the students a broader framework within which elective courses are made available according to the students’ chosen areas of interest. The foremost objective of the Department has been to equip the students to be future academicians, diplomats, experts for national andinternational organizations, and political leaders. The undergraduate program encompasses core courses in International Relations Theory, International Politics, International Law, International Political Economy, International Organizations and courses on regional studies. Students are encouraged in their latter years to concentrate on the international relations of particular regions. Among them, special importance is attached to the international relations of the European, Middle Eastern, Central Asian and Far Eastern states. For that purpose, the Department encourages the students to learn at least one of the languages of the area they are specializing in, including Japanese, Arabic, Russian, French, etc. Within this context, the students also have the opportunity to have electives from other departments in accordance with their interests. Computer literacy constitutes another major field that the students are encouraged and expected to succeed in. Thus, with the recognition that communication and computer skills are vital in a field characterized by increasing interaction, the program facilitates the development of language and computer skills of the students. A minor in European Studies -which reflects the importance given to regional studies in the Department- has been offered since 1995. The program covers such areas as the process of European integration, European security, Turco-European relations, German foreign policy, East-Central Europe, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean politics, politics in the Balkans, development of the European states-system and the British school of international relations. The program has been quite popular with the students. The purpose of the European Studies Minor Program is to provide students majoring in other disciplines with insight into issues in contemporary European economic and political agenda. The program addresses students' interest in International Relations and European affairs with two core courses and a selection of electives as may be relevant to related disciplines.
